Care guide
Cleaning, polishing and storing silver- and gold-plated pieces.
Not sure of the finish: The finish of your order is shown in the order confirmation email and under My account > My orders.

These steps are general advice for caring for metal pieces. Product-specific instructions are in the “Care” section of the product page.

Silver plate
Silver plate darkens as it comes into contact with air. This is natural and does not mean the plating is damaged.
Silver-plated piecesCleaning
- Rinse in lukewarm water after use.
- If needed, use a little mild washing-up liquid and a soft sponge.
- Dry straight away with a lint-free cotton cloth.
Avoid: dishwasher, steel wool, abrasive sponges, bleach.
Polishing
- Wipe light tarnish with a silver polishing cloth.
- For heavier tarnish, use a little polish suitable for silver plate.
- Rinse and dry.
Every polish removes a thin layer; polish only when needed. The darker tone inside embossing is part of the pattern.
Storage
- Store completely dry.
- Wrap in acid-free paper, a cotton bag or an anti-tarnish bag.
- Keep in a cupboard free of damp.
Avoid: rubber bands, newspaper, cling film.
Egg, mayonnaise, mustard and salt tarnish silver quickly; if you have served them, clean the piece the same day.
Gold plate
Gold plate does not tarnish, but as a thin layer it is sensitive to rubbing. The aim of care is not to wear the surface.
Gold-plated piecesCleaning
- Dust with a soft, dry cloth.
- If needed, wipe gently with lukewarm water and a little mild soap.
- Dry straight away.
Avoid: dishwasher, abrasive sponges, chemical cleaners.
Polishing
Do not polish gold plate. Silver polishes and polishing cloths can wear away the gold layer. A dry, soft cloth is enough for a dulled surface.
Storage
Wrap and store pieces separately so they do not touch other metal; contact can cause scratches.
Brass and bronze
The body of our pieces is brass. Unplated or bronze-coloured surfaces darken over time and take on a warm patina.
The bronze surface is not plating but a patina applied to the brass, sealed with a protective lacquer.
Bronze piecesCleaning
- Wipe with a soft, dry cloth.
- If needed, wipe with a slightly damp cloth and dry straight away.
Avoid: dishwasher, soaking.
Polishing
Do not use brass polish until you know whether the surface is lacquered; polish can mark a lacquered surface. To keep the patina, wipe only with a dry cloth.
Storage
Store in a dry place free of damp.
Other materials
If you can separate it from the metal, wash it by hand on its own; do not wet the metal.
Wipe up anything acidic straight away; marble can stain from acid.
Do not soak; wipe with a damp cloth and dry.
Wipe with a slightly damp cloth and let it dry naturally; keep it away from heat.
